Defender and half-forward who debuted in 1932 and played the rest of the season but managed just two matches the next year. Unable to secure a permanent spot in the Redleg lineup, and dropped from the senior list before the 1936 season. He was sought by Essendon, who had been trying to sign him for over a year. Roberts was recalled by the Demons for four games during the year, before finally making it to Essendon in 1937.
Roberts played 12 games for Essendon before signing for VFA side Prahran the next year. He spent two seasons at the Two Blues before enlisting in the army (2/21st Infantry Battalion) for World War II. Roberts was captured by the Japanese during the Battle of Ambon in 1942 and died of illness brought on by years of maltreatment in June 1945.
Before his football career he played junior representative cricket for Victoria.
