Melbourne had lost two of their first three, but the losses had been against the two best teams in the competition - and with three debutants in the side they recorded a much needed victory over the Maroons.

Despite the victory it was Melbourne's lowest score against Fitzroy in a decade. It left the Reds a game and percentage outside of the four.

Vine, Ogden and Mueller were best. Colin Niven was reported for striking and elbowing but cleared on both charges. George Margitich was concussed.
