Melbourne had lost two of their first three, but the defeats had came against the two best teams in the competition. With three debutants in the side they recorded a much needed victory over the Maroons.
It took five minutes for the home side to kick the first goal of the game but it was their only one for the quarter as Fitzroy used an aerial superiority to kick three before quarter time. The contest turned full circle in the second when it was the Redlegs that kicked three goals to one, levelling the scores at half time.
After half time Melbourne took over in the aerial duels, and spent most of the second half on the attack in a tough game with much bumping between players. Fitzroy was forced into a replacement when one of their players was severely bumped in a collision. The much improved quarter only generated a seven point lead, and a minute into the last term the Roys were back to one point behind. Now Melbourne was playing with a congested forward line and spurned multiple opportunities.
A snap by Bennett gave his side some breathing room until Fitzroy cut the gap again. Another goal extended the margin to two kicks but the Maroons missed multiple opportunities before kicking a goal that dragged the margin back under a goal. The teams then traded goals again, before time ran out on the visitors.
Despite the victory it was Melbourne's lowest score against Fitzroy in a decade. It left the Reds a game and percentage outside of the four.
Vine, Ogden and Mueller were best. McNamara was 19th man. Fisher (strain) was replaced by Deague in the selected side.
Colin Niven was reported for striking and elbowing but cleared on both charges. George Margitich was concussed.
