Previously on Collingwood's list without playing a senior game, Vanthoff was recruited by Melbourne in 1930.

A crumbing half-forward and forward pocket who could also play as a rover, he was a near regular in his first four seasons on the list and played state football in 1933 before only managing five games in 1934.

Dropped from Melbourne's list in April 1935, Vanthoff played for VFA side Camberwell in 1935 and 1936. He served with the Air Force during World War II.

During his career, Vanthoff worked as a curator for the MCG. He continued in the role after leaving Melbourne.
