Melbourne debuted the first four of 13 new players for the season, but were comfortably beaten by their neighbours. Richmond were wasteful in the first quarter, and could have had a larger lead than 11 points but only managed four goals from 10 scoring shots. The Reds had kicked the first goal of the game just seconds after the first bounce, but Richmond soon hit back and kicked four goals to three for the term.
Melbourne remained close at half-time, before Richmond kicked away with seven goals to nil in the third term and that was the difference at the final bell. Jack Titus' eight goals and the third term burst were the difference between the two sides on the day. Melbourne put in a better final term in kicking seven goals but conceded five to barely reduce the margin.
Ogden was best, along with first gamers Mueller and La Fontaine. Long suffered a cut over his eye. Sambell was 19th man.
