Cleared to Melbourne in May 1933 but remained with the Seconds until making his senior debut a year and a half later, in the second last game of 1934. Earlier that year he had played for the VFL Seconds in a representative game.

During 1935, the wingman was hospitalised with an infected leg and only played two senior games. Sweeney was cut from Melbourne's list shortly before the start of the 1936 season.

Notes
Probably wore Number 35 in 1934 as well but there are no records to confirm this.
