The vastly improved Redlegs had fought their way to sixth on the ladder, but faced a significant challenge in bridging the gap to fourth placed South. On a heavy ground after recent rain, they stuck with the Swans until half-time. The combined 10 goals between the sides in the opening quarter was worthy of a dry day, with the visitors kicking the first two, and six before the first break. Melbourne started the second quarter with goals to Margitich and Beames, but couldn't sustain the pressure. South kicked 4.2 to a point to end the quarter, setting up a 25 point lead at half time. Withwith Bob Pratt on the way to nine goals South booted seven goals to two in the third term to open up an unbeatable gap.

Pratt kicked three goals to start the second half, and while Melbourne was resolute in defence, a pair of defensive errors led to further goals. Even when La Fontaine got two in a row, South cancelled them out almost immediately and opened a 56 point lead at the last change. The last quarter was played out at a slow pace, with the result decided and the heavy ground having sapped the legs of both sides. The quality was further affected when the match - which had started late - ended in semi-darkness.

Best were Jones, Niven and La Fontaine. Despite a heavy defeat that left Melbourne three games out of the top four, it was their best performance against South in seven years.

The loss left Melbourne three games out of the top four.

Kinnear was selected as 19th man.
