South Melbourne win by 56 points
The vastly imrpoved Redlegs had fought their way to sixth on the ladder, but faced a significant challenge in bridging the gap to fourth placed South. They stuck with the Swans until half-time, but with Bob Pratt on the way to nine goals South booted seven goals to two in the third term to open up an unbeatable gap.
La Fontaine and Niven were best. Despite the heavy defeat it was Melbourne's best performance against South in seven years.
The loss left Melbourne three games out of the top four.
