After a promising performance in defeat against Richmond to open the season, second gamers La Fontaine and Mueller dominated Hawthorn with 16 goals between them in their second league matches. The Mayblooms had given the more fancied Carlton trouble for three quarters but turned up the following Saturday listless and lacking in organisation.
The two sides played out an even first quarter before the home side booted seven goals to two in the second quarter to kill the contest. Another six goals to one in the third turned a comfortable win into a potential thrashing.
With the addition of four goals from Beames to add to La Fontaine and Mueller's heroics it was the first time in league history that 20 goals had been shared between three players - and as Hawthorn's six goals were shared between two players it meant 26 goals were kicked by just five men.
Mueller was Melbourne's best, kicking seven and helping La Fontaine to a number of his goals. Ogden and Sambell were also among the best players.
