Any chance Melbourne had of making the top four had been ruined when they conceded 10 goals in the first quarter against Geelong the previous Saturday, and they slipped further into the mid-table battle with a comfortable loss to the Maroons.
Neither side would feature in the finals, but Fitzroy passed Melbourne on percentages as a result of their win.
Before the game Melbourne's President Joe Blair presented a silver cup to Fitzroy winger Doug Nicholls to celebrate his "clean and clever football" against the Demons in their first meeting of the year.
Best was Roberts.
Captain Colin Niven said "We were toos low off the mark. Fitzroy's pace and cooperation were features, and their attacking division functioned better than ours."
