For the first time, Melbourne paid players beyond expenses, but for the second year in a row only the moribund University kept them off the bottom of the ladder. Two wins over the Students were the only victories all year, one less than they had in 1913. Their cause wasn't helped by champion rover Hedley Tomkins moving to Western Australia to join East Perth, and the committee later blamed their lack of success on highly rated junior players not living up to their promise.
In addition to openly paying players, the club strengthened its training staff. Jim Mitchell adding former University trainer McCormicks to his team, along with Moody, Fry, Lewis, Over and Tout.
Melbourne's delegates to the league were once again Andrew Manzie and Bill McClelland. A proposal for a district football scheme which would introduce recruiting zones was defeated when the required 3/4 majority was not achieved, Melbourne was one of four clubs against the idea.
At the end of the season, University went into recess. They officially amalgamated with Melbourne but got nothing out of it the deal other than seats on the committee, while the Reds gained a number of the failed club's best players, helping catapult them back into the finals in 1915.
