Formerly captain of South Ballarat, Fairbairn was transferred to the city for work before the 1910 season and joined Melbourne. He came to the club with a huge reputation but never lived up to it.

Fairbairn had a personal best of four goals, against St Kilda in Round 10, 1910. He played at Yinnar in 1913, then returned to Melbourne 1914 for a further three games.

After his career ended he spent six years serving on Cranbourne council.
