Captain of South Ballarat for four years before being recruited, Fairbairn was transferred to the city for work before the 1910 season and joined Melbourne. He came to the club with a huge reputation but never lived up to it.
Fairbairn had a personal best of four goals, against St Kilda in Round 10, 1910. He then spent two years in the country, playing at Yinnar in 1913, then returned to Melbourne 1914 for a further three games.
