Despite suffering their second loss of the season the Reds put in a far more encouraging performance than they had against the reigning premiers Fitzroy a week earlier. In glorious weather, they kicked just one more goal than the previous week but managed to restrict the dangerous Collingwood forward line to a respectable score. Other than a disastrous second quarter where they conceded three goals to nil they had the better of the play.

Melbourne had the first goal of the game through Allen, before the Pies equalised not long after. They got the only other goal of the second quarter

After failing to kick a goal in the second term the Fuschias conceded the first two goals of the third quarter but made a belated comeback before the last change to at least make the game interesting. That was as good as it got for them, Collingwood ran away with it again in the last. Despite this Melbourne almost had the better of the contest, but their weakness in the forward line was clear.

They had scored the first goal of the day, but their poor second quarter cost them. Melbourne did well to defend the multiple attacks from the Magpies, and the backmen did well to keep the Pies to just three goals. The home team played with surprising vigour in the second half but couldn't break through the Collingwood defence.

Best were Gray, Walker and Colee.
