After six straight losses Melbourne finally scored their first victory of the year in a bottom of the table clash against the league's other easybeats. A battle of two winless teams pointed to a tight contest, but the Reds kicked away from the start of the game.

Debutante Connole got the first goal, and by quarter time it was five to one and the game was all but over. A further five goals to nil in the second term and a 55 point lead half time lead confirmed an easy victory. Arthur Best kicked five in his second game with the club.

With an eye to a match against Richmond two days later they eased off after half time and let University keep the scoreline respectable.

Best were Trahair, Hendrie and Lugton.

Notes
Connole likely goalled with his first kick and potentially his second.
