With both the state and federal governors in attendance the first half of the season ended with Melbourne suffering their eighth loss from nine appearances.
South Melbourne were in the midst of an injury crisis and had trouble fielding a full 18, but the side they did put out ran away to an easy victory after the first quarter.
Melbourne threatened on many occassions, but most of the time the South defence held them out and they were unable to put up anything near a winning score.
Best were Incigneri, Evans and Lugton. Defeat left Melbourne second last, a game above University but two behind Richmond.
