Evans joined the army in August 1914 but was able to play out the rest of the season, and most of the next before Melbourne went into recess.
Despite suffering a leg injury in France and returning to training with his leg in a brace, "Dodger" intended to return to football in 1919. He played one game, but the effects of his injuries were too great to overcome and he retired.
