In July 1915 Britter enlisted in the army and served in the 31st Battalion during World War I.
He returned to Chilwell and missed ten years of senior football before returning to play in a Geelong Seconds premiership in 1923, and added a single senior game for them as a 33-year-old in 1924. He continued playing for their Seconds team until being appointed Chilwell coach in 1928.
