Melbourne recovered from a 2-4 start to make finals for the first time under the top four system, but were eliminated at the first hurdle. It was their last finals appearance until 1915.
On Saturday 2 September, a benefit game was played for ex-Redleg champion Fred McGinis, who had retired at the end of 1901 after suffering failing eyesight. 500p was raised, and 7000 people saw the VFL beat the VFA 9.17 to 4.5.
