A pacy and clever winger, Gardner played in his school's football side between 1894 and 1897 and was captain in his last year before joining Essendon.
After 12 games in two seasons the brother of Eric Gardner and Mark Gardner was cleared to Melbourne in April 1900 and formed part of that year's premiership side.
He was a five time Victorian and one-time Australian hurdles champion, and was one of only two Australian representatives at the 1904 St Louis Summer Olympics where he competed in the 120yd hurdles and long jump.
In 1999 he was named in the Melbourne Grammar Team of the Century.
