Melbourne were heavy favourites despite having a number of players unavailable, and for the first three quarters they were dominant courtesy of poor field kicking by their opposition.

St Kilda improved significantly in the last quarter and kicked all three of their goals, but they were too far behind to trouble Melbourne. Though their side had been terrible for three quarters St Kilda fans blamed the umpire for defeat, and he had to be escorted off the ground by players.

Best were Herring, Moodie and Coutie.
