Debuting with the Reds in 1893, Wardill remained with the club throughout its early VFL years but also filled in with his old side Alberton in 1895. He missed the first five rounds of 1897 while playing Juniors with Caulfield, before returning to Melbourne.
He was one of the best afield in the shock 1900 Grand Final triumph.
Played for the VFL in a game against Ballarat in June 1900.
He retired after three games of 1901, but returned the next season to play the first three games of the year again.
In 1924 he appeared in an 'old players' charity game aged 52. He died after jumping in front of a train in 1929.
