In the absence of C. Gardiner. Parkin, Leith and Wardill, Melbourne were let down badly by their forwards who missed a number of chances. Their general play improved in the second half but they had left themselves too much to do, and a goalless last term condemned them to defeat.
They began the last term strongly, but with Essendon's newly elected captain Stuckey rallying his troops and then inspiring them with a goal they were home.
Best were Langley, Moodie and Anderson.
