After beating the traditionally hapless St Kilda in Round 1, Melbourne welcomed one of the league's best sides to the MCG and pushed them until the last quarter.
In what was otherwise a good standard game both sides were hampered throughout the game by players leaving their positions and wandering around the ground. Collingwood were slightly more disciplined, used their scoring opportunities better, and used their advantage in the ruck to their favour.
The margin was less than a goal at the three quarter time break, but Collingwood handled the slippery ball better and ran away in the end.
Best were Purse, Gardiner and Sowden.
