Melbourne started well, and quickly had the first behind of the game. They added an opening goal through Leith not long after. The visitors responded, before Leith scored the last goal of the first term to go into the quarter time break nine points ahead.

Each side kicked two goals in the second quarter, but Melbourne also added eight behinds to nil. Leith's third extended the margin, before Sowden added another to have the home side in the ascendancy. St Kilda wouldn't go away, kicking two in a row and withstanding the ongoing assault on their goal to concede only points for the rest of the quarter.

The margin was narrowly expanded at three quarter time, before Melbourne kicked away with four goals to one in the final term.
