On a wet, windy day with a heavy ground it was a low scoring game. Collingwood were the better side in the first half, but only led by two goals to one thanks to sure marking. Melbourne hadn't used the wind effectively in the first quarter but skipped ahead in the third quarter with three goals in a row before Collingwood kicked a late goal to cut the margin to two points.
The Magpies then ran away with the game in the last quarter, holding Melbourne scoreless while they added four goals to win comfortably.
Best were Parkin, Bowe and Purse. Bowe suffered a broken finger.
