Former Fitzroy player who crossed to the Redlegs for the start of the 1899 season, but missed the 1900 premiership triumph when he didn't play a game after round 17 that year.
When reported for 'umpire jostling' in Round 9, 1900, Moriarty became the first Melbourne player ever to face the VFL tribunal. He would go on to face the second and third charges in club history as well.
Moriarty was killed by a freight train near Jolimont Station on 26 August 1903. Authorities determined from the position of the body that he had committed suicide, but Melbourne secretary Amos Norcott gave evidence at the inquest that it may have been due to an epileptic seizure. Norcott testified that Moriarty had suffered two seizures on the club's recent trip to Bairnsdale. The jury returned an open verdict on the death, but the coroner gave weight to the epileptic fit theory.
Before his death he had been employed as a groundsman at the MCG.
