A seriously undermanned Melbourne team got the jump on their more fancied opponents in the first half but were chased down in the third quarter and unable to respond in the last.
After Melbourne had attacked strongly to open the second half and opened up what was heading towards an insurmountable lead Essendon charged back to take the lead going into the last term. Melbourne got the last of the final term through Rainey to close the gape to two points but goals to Essendon champion Thurgood regained the advantage for his side and they went on to win easily.
Best were Moodie, Langley and Sowden.
