Davey came to Melbourne from a strong football family, his cousin was Brownlow Medal winner Gavin Wanganeen and his father had been an accomplished player at Palmerston and Port Lincoln. Unable to attend the 2003 draft camp for personal reasons, Davey was not drafted and joined VFL side Port Melbourne at the invitation of North Melbourne. North and Port Adelaide both overlooked Davey as too small, but after playing 11 VFL games and being named the league's best under 23 player, Melbourne took a chance on him in the 2003 Rookie Draft.

The cash-strapped Demons initially couldn't afford the $10,000 for Davey to be eligible for senior games, so a coterie group stumped up the cash in time for him to debut in Round 1, 2004. It was a wise investment, as he made an immediate impact. Other than a four week break with a hamstring injury in Round 16 he played the full season, finished second in the Rising Star, and won a two year contract extension.

2005 was an even better year, finishing second in the club's best and fairest and playing International Rules for Australia. He achieved a career best 36 goals the next season before his output was affected by Melbourne's plummet to the bottom of the ladder.

After cameo appearances in the midfield in previous years, coach Dean Bailey gave Davey a permanent midfield/half-back role in early 2009 and 'Flash' won the club's Best and Fairest. Despite speculation that he'd look for another club at the end of the year, Davey signed a four year contract to play out his career with Melbourne. He was elevated to the leadership group for 2010, and played the first 20 games before a broken fibula in Round 20 ended his season.

A disappointing 2011 campaign was marred by a persistent knee injury which caused Davey to miss ten weeks. Returning for three games at the end of the season he sat out the finish to the year when suspended for striking while playing against Richmond in Round 22. Davey's 2012 was another one to forget. Early in the season, he was embroiled in a media frenzy when an AFL employee incorrectly claimed Davey had accused coach Mark Neeld of discriminatory treatment of indigenous players. The allegations were untrue, and the employee apologised, but it kicked off Davey's worst season yet. He was dropped, then injured when recalled, and as he was working his way back into the side for the third time foot stress fractures while playing for Casey kept him out for the rest of the year.

Before the 2013 season Davey played for the Indigenous All-Stars team in their annual match against Richmond, but he had another down year. After starting as a substitute six times in 2013 Davey announced his retirement before Round 22 and played his final match a week later.

After his AFL retirement Davey was named the vice-captain of an Indigenous All-Stars team which toured Ireland. He played three games for the Richmond VFL side in 2014. Davey also appeared in a game for West Preston Lakeside that year, and in 2015 played a one-off game for Kilcunda Bass Panthers along with ex-teammates Liam Jurrah and Aaron Davey.

Davey's brother Alwyn played for Essendon from 2007 to 2013, his nephew Alwyn Jr. debuted for the Bombers in 2023.
