The second year of the Paul Roos era saw further improvement by the Dees, with their best season since 2011. They won their first Round 1 game since 2005, beat Geelong for the first time since that year and Collingwood for the first time since 2007. They also won their first game at Docklands and in the last round since 2007.

Top draft pick Christian Petracca suffered a year ending knee injury during a pre-season training drill, and former captain Jack Trengove didn't play a game as he continued to battle a foot injury.

Mark Jamar and Daniel Cross retired at the end of the season. Rohan Bail, Jack Fitzpatrick, Jordie McKenzie and Aidan Riley were delisted.

The club made a profit of $562,366.

Melbourne FC Women won both their games against the Western Bulldogs to extend their overall record to 4-0.
