Formed as a merger of the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy at the end of 1996, the Lions had a rocky start to life as a merged club but soon won three consecutive premierships.
Melbourne's AFLW team played their first premiership match against the Lions, and won their first premiership against them in the 2022 AFLW spring season.
