The Demons ended their wretched season, the lowest in wins since 1981 and the worst for percentage since 1919 with what counted - for them - as a respectable loss.
After a guard of honour of past and present players welcomed retiree Aaron Davey onto the field, the Demons flattered in the first quarter before falling apart in the second just like they had a week earlier against the Crows.
Despite kicking the first goal of the second quarter Melbourne were being comfortably beaten by the Bulldogs in the middle of the ground and eventually succumbed to a burst of seven goals in a row amongst nine for the quarter.
With the game all but lost the Demons conceded the first goal of the third quarter, but then went on to kick the last three - including one after the siren by Jack Watts which kept them within reasonable striking distance at the final change.
The Demons were unable to capitalise, but still managed to win their third quarter of the day.
Best were N. Jones, McKenzie and Grimes.
Luke Tapscott replaced Max Gawn during the third quarter.
