For once the Demons managed to hold their opponents to a respectable score, but they were unable to back it up with a winning tally of their own. Having come off a rare win against St Kilda a week before, Carl Ditterich left Phil Carman on the bench in the first quarter but was forced to bring him on in the second term when the Pies were threatening to run all over the top of his side.

It was a disaster and Carman gave away two 15 metre penalties and flew high into packs with no rhyme or reason before getting his first kick late in the term. Despite the complete lack of confidence their expensive spearhead was playing with the Demons managed to stay in touch thanks to Robert Flower and Andrew Moir, as well as young Peter Giles who handily beat Rene Kink.

If Flower or Moir had kicked more accurately their side might have been nearer than six points behind at the last change. Despite having wasted chances to put themselves in front the Demons still kicked the first two goals of the last quarter to get ahead, before Carman gave away a needless free kick in the forward line by crashing through a pack and the Pies went up the other end and steadied before going on to win. Flower too missed a pair of shots on goal late in the quarter while playing in the unaccustomed role of full forward.

Carman's final tally was two kicks, one handball, three frees against and three 15 metre penalties against. Forced to defend him after the match Ditterich said "Search your souls before crucifying him". Despite the support the word was that with 12 days before the transfer deadline the Demons were desperate to move him on.

Best were Fowler, Baker and Healy. Graham Gaunt was reported for striking and suspended for two matches. Ditterich was a late withdrawal before the match with a back injury.
