1931 Seconds Grand Final

October 10 - MCG

Melbourne 3.7, 4.9, 7.13, 8.13.61
Geelong 1.3, 6.3, 7.3, 8.5.53

Goals - Lindsay 5, Comber 1, Kelly 1, Cassidy 1

Despite patchy forward play the Redlegs won the Seconds premiership as a result of their superior marking and ruck work. They made the visitors wait, arriving onto the MCG seven minutes late.

Geelong kept the match interesting by making more of their limited opportunities up front. Melbourne should have had a winning total after the first quarter, but were wasteful in their shots while kicking with a stiff breeze.

Against the wind, Geelong's only score of the third quarter was a goal on the bell. This restricted the lead to 10 points at the last change and gave them a chance to run over the top.

At three quarter time Melbourne opted for defence, taking off five goal kicked Lindsay and bringing Noseda on. The Redlegs had to fight into the wind but held on grimly to win their first ever Seconds flag. Geelong missed a shot on goal to go ahead, and Kelly kicked the sealer.

Best were Power, Adams and Gough
