After first appearing on the senior list in 1969, wearing number 42 Campbell played eight games in 1970 before returning to Shepparton United in the Goulburn Valley League. He was named their captain/coach in 1973 aged 23.

Campbell came back to the Demons in 1975 and played three more seasons before retiring. In his last year Campbell was captain of the Reserves. He then coached Tongala in 1978, before rejoining Shepparton United again in 1979, captain/coaching them from 1980 through 1982. He then returned to Tongala in 1983, and in 1992 coached Kyabram, then the ACTFL's Tuggeranong in 1992.

His son Brad played for Melbourne and another, Blake, played for Carlton.
