After first appearing on the senior list in 1969, the defender played eight games in 1970 before returning to Shepparton United in the Goulburn Valley League. He was named their captain/coach in 1973 aged 23. Melbourne was keen to keep Campbell but he preferred to remain in the country, only reluctantly travelling to the city to train and play.

Campbell returned to the Demons in 1975 and played three more seasons before retiring. In his last year Campbell was captain of the Reserves. He then captain/coached Tongala in 1978 and 1979 before rejoining Shepparton United again in 1980, captain/coaching them through 1982. He then returned to Tongala in 1983 through 1985 and in 1992 coached Kyabram, then the ACTFL's Tuggeranong in 1992.

His son Brad played for Melbourne and another, Blake, played for Carlton.
