A hard-working utility, Hutchison played 115 Reserves games during his Melbourne career, many at the start and end of his time with the club. His first full season was 1978, but he never played more than 20 games in year again. An Achilles operation at the end of 1982 kept him out until the last two games of 1983.

Hutchison played one senior game in 1984, before retiring from the senior side and captaining the Reserves to a premiership. He turned back offers from clubs in Tasmania, Queensland and Canberra to captain/coach VFA side Prahran in 1986. He led them to a Second Division premiership the next year, also playing representative games for the VFA. He remained at Prahran until the end of 1989 before joining Melbourne's match committee. He then coached the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup competition from 1993 to 1995.

Image Hutchison rejoined Melbourne as an assistant and development coach in 1996. The next year he was appointed as caretaker coach when Neale Balme was sacked during the season. He made the last four for the senior job alongside Neale Daniher, Peter Schwab and Damian Drum but lost to Daniher in a close decision.

In 2000 he joined Richmond as an assistant to Danny Frawley. Hutchison coached the Casey Demons in 2008 before becoming Football Manager at St. Kilda in 2009 when the Saints affiliation with Casey ended.

Coached Old Brighton from 2015 through 2021, including a B Section premiership in 2017.
