1936 Seconds Grand Final

Saturday 3 October - MCG

Footscray 5.1, 7.2, 12.9, 15.11.101
Melbourne 0.5, 3.8, 4.10, 6.14.50

Footscray win by 51 points

Goalkickers: Feltscheer 2, Oakley 1, Kelly 1, Ball 1, Munday 1

After five straight Seconds premierships - including from fourth in 1935 - Melbourne finally came unstuck after finishing top of the ladder with only two losses all season. Their streak was finished at quarter time, when Footscray used a wind advantage to open a 26 point lead. Melbourne won in the air but were beaten in all other departments and failed to kick a goal.

The Reds were better in the second term, and their rucks gave Feltscheer chances up front for the first time but against a firm Footscray defence the lead was barely reduced by the long break. By the last change the Tricolours were 47 points in front and home. Melbourne tried hard in the third quarter but were unable to break through and with their forward play failing badly conceded five goals to one.

Joe Kinnear was reported, then hurried to the Albert Ground immediately after the game to play cricket for the MCC.

Best were Ball, Wilcox and Jones
