After a disappointing 1992 campaign which saw a five year finals streak snapped John Northey left for Richmond and was replaced with ex-Tigers premiership player Neale Balme who had been coaching in the SANFL. A selection committee of Hassa Mann, Noel McMahen, Ray Manley and Steven Smith chose Balme over Stan Alves, Peter Hudson, Greg Wells, Reserves coach Mark Cross, Essendon Reserves coach Denis Pagan and Kevin Morris.

After significant financial losses over the previous two seasons, the club signed a $300,000 a year major sponsorship with Pioneer Homes, twice their 1992 deal with Snowy Mountain Water. Player salaries were slashed before the year to try and reign in some of the financial troubles. The club appealed to fans to helped by joining as members, but only saw an increase of around 1400 on 1992.

The AFL proposed to merge the Reserves (known under the name Victorian State Football League)) with the VFA, giving each Victorian club an Association affiliate. Melbourne would likely have partnered with Prahran but VFA clubs rejected the proposal. In 2000 a similar system was introduced, by which time Prahran had left the competition.

In a tight final ladder, the Demons finished 10th, two games out of the finals but only percentage above the 11th and 12th placed teams. The three teams who finished on ten wins for the season then had a lead of six games over the next placed side.

The Reserves won Melbourne's 12th and last premiership in the grade.

At the end of the year the Demons delisted Darren Bennett, Shane Burgmann, Darren Cuthbertson, Brett Evans, Andy Goodwin, Greg Healy, Brett Jeffrey, Rod Keogh, Matthew Mackay, Damon Munt, Michael Pickering, Scott Simister, Steven Stretch and David Taylor.

A purported seven-year, $2 million sponsorship deal signed with Tooheys at the end of the year proved controversial as the AFL was sponsored by their rivals Carlton and United. St Kilda had entered into a similar arrangement with Tooheys before the start of the season, with the AFL admitting they had no rules to prevent the partnership.
