Ellingsen came from Geelong to the city to make his debut for Richmond as a 16-year-old in 1912 and played six games before crossing to Melbourne the next year. His best performance for Richmond saw him kick five goals against University, but they opted to concentrate on locals rather than pay expenses for Ellingsen to travel from Geelong.
He played two games for Melbourne during 1913, then moved to East Geelong. Signed with Geelong in 1915, and even though his new side dropped out of the competition due to the First World War Ellingsen played three seasons with them when after they returned in 1917.
He joined VFA side North Melbourne in 1920, moving to Footscray when North disbanded during 1921, then playing for the short lived Geelong Association club in 1922. Urban legend has it that during his time at North Melbourne he was suspended for a year then pardoned in an act of clemency coinciding with a royal visit.
In 1925 he was refused a permit to rejoin Geelong Association from Rochester. He also coached Tungamah.
In 1930 he became umpire in the Geelong and District Football League, and was appointed to the VFL senior list the next year. Also working in the Goulburn Valley Football League he umpired 53 VFL and 24 country matches between 1931 and 1933. In 1931 he skated for 100 consecutive hours.
In 1934 he rejected an offer from the Mildura League to join them as an umpire and chose to go to Tasmania and umpire in the TANFL. He remained there through 1935, before working for the North-West Football Union, Northern Tasmanian Football Association and Tasmanian Amateur Football Association over the next four years before retiring from umpiring.
He then returned to Melbourne but went back to Tasmania in 1946, becoming president and non-playing coach of Ulverstone.
After a short illness he died in May 1947.
