After a standout junior basketball career, including being named in the Australian under-18 squad, Petracca was voted the best player in the 2014 Under 18 All-Australian tournament. He was an All-Australian player and named in the TAC Cup team of the year before being selected by Melbourne with the second pick of the 2014 Draft.

Petracca suffered a season ending knee injury in the 2015 pre-season, and after sitting out the whole year he made his debut early the next year and quickly became a regular playing across half-forward and through the midfield. He won a Rising Star nomination in Round 9 that year.

One of the few players to appear in every game in 2017 he impressed as a forward, with spells in the midfield and kicked 26 goals. He was mostly played as a forward again in 2018, having a career best number of scoring shots but restricted to 19.23 by inaccuracy.

Assigned Number 26 in 2015.
