Coming off a five day break after a win over the unbeaten Geelong, Melbourne responded with their first scoreless opening quarter since 2008. They were competitive in general play, but inability to score or keep the ball at their end of the ground allowed the Blues to score on the rebound. When the Blues kicked the first goal of the second term to lead 36-0, the game looked over. After being tagged in the first quarter, Christian Petracca went forward and helped change the game with two goals. It was initially little help, as even a late Daniel Turner goal from a downfield free kick saw them lose the second quarter by a point.

Carlton kicked the first goal after half time within 30 seconds, but Melbourne gradually worked their way back into the game to cut the margin to 22 points at the final change. They allowed another quick goal in the final term, before dominating the rest of the term. Late goals to Caleb Windsor, a career best fifth for Christian Petracca, and Max Gawn, cut the gap to less than one kick in the final minute. They went forward from the last centre bounce but were unable to score again, falling a point short, and suffering their third consecutive loss to the Blues by under a goal.

It was Melbourne's highest ever score in a game where they were scoreless in the first quarter.

Best were Petracca, May, and Neal-Bullen

Taj Woewodin replaced Jake Bowey in the fourth quarter
