The heavily undermanned Suns lost another player for the game in the opening minutes, prompting a 9.3 Melbourne avalanche in the first quarter. It was the equal fourth biggest first quarter in club history, and the second biggest lead they'd ever had at quarter time.
The lead peaked at 75 points in the second quarter, before two late Gold Coast goals reduced the margin to 'just' 64 at half time. Melbourne was wasteful with 2.6 in the third term, before exerting their dominance again in the last. The margin reached an even hundred 23 minutes into the final term before the Suns got the last goal to save some humiliation.
Best were Hogan, Salem and Tyson. Christian Petracca was fined $1000 for umpire contact. Joel Smith suffered a broken collarbone.
The win lifted Melbourne to fourth on the ladder.
