Returning to the MCG from an unexpected thrashing against Fremantle, Melbourne's attacking woes continued to haunt them as they only kicked six goals on King's Birthday, and never seriously threatened the Pies. In a contest shortly before quarter time, Christian Petracca was seriously injured by a knee to the back. He returned to the game during the second term, but was barely able to play and was taken off at half time. Petracca was later transferred to hospital, where he was placed in intensive care with injuries to his ribs and spleen that would ultimately end his 2024 season.
An early third quarter goal for Jacob van Rooyen, who had all of Melbourne's majors to that stage, cut the margin to 21 points but there was no comeback and Collingwood eased to victory.
Best were Max Gawn, Alex Neal-Bullen, and Kysaiah Pickett. Jack Billings replaced Christian Petracca at half time.
