Stretch began at West Torrens as an 11-year-old and rose through their junior ranks to play 60 games, including an SANFL premiership. A 1985 state player he initially planned to remain in South Australia in 1986 year before changing his mind, rejecting an increased offer to stay, then crossing to Victoria where he was an immediate hit with 18 games in his first season.
The next year, with the Demons suddenly a finals contender Stretch won the club's Best and Fairest and played for South Australia again. His 1988 season was equally as good, and though he dropped to fifth in the best and fairest Stretch was one of the big hitters in a Demon side which went all the way to a Grand Final. In 1989 he returned to the "Bluey" podium with a second place finish.
Stretch played finals again in 1990 and 1991 but suffered a knee injury in Round 13, 1992. It was initially thought he would require a reconstruction but he only missed six weeks, despite playing 14 games in 1993 for his best goals return yet he was delisted. He trained with Richmond in the 1994 pre-season but did not join the Tigers, ultimately signing with Fitzroy where he played two seasons.
