An attempt by the SANFL to field a side in the VFL competition had been rejected as early as August 1981 and despite a promise to consider the possibility of a side in 1983 or 1984 fans in South Australia had to wait another decade to see a team of their own in the league.

The formation of a broadbased Adelaide club was prompted by the application of Port Adelaide to join the AFL competition as a standalone side.
