The second earliest recorded born Melbourne VFL player behind Ned Sutton who was five months older, backman Healing debuted with the club in 1889 and remained with them as a centre-half back throughout the last years of the VFA and into the new competition.

He initially retired before the 1897 season to concentrate on cycling before returning to the side early that year.

After his final retirement, Healing opened a bicycle store and grew the business into one of the largest of its type in Australia. In 1926 he diversified into auto parts.
