Darren Bennett and ex-Demon Tony Campbell, the only two players in the AFL who played wearing gloves, matched up and Bennett was his side's leading goalkicker on a dark day for the Demons. Melbourne was down to 32 players to fill both their senior and Reserves sides, and were thrashed.
The match was already well and truly over before Footscray piled on 10 goals to one in the last term. A disconsolate John Northey said: "We've got to make sure that we show the people that we can still play football".
Steven Stretch suffered a knee injury which was originally thought to require a reconstruction, but eventually kept him out for just six weeks.
Best were G. Lovett, Schwarz and J. Stynes. Allen Jakovich was a late withdrawal with a back injury, and Peter Rohde pulled out as his wife was in labour. Simon Eishold was removed from the Reserves game after a quarter to allow him to play for the senior side
Graeme Yeats was reported for striking Nigel Kellett with an arm to the head during the second term and suspended for three matches despite claiming he raised his arms to smother and protect himself as Kellett handballed. .
