In the usual humid, greasy Darwin conditions, the Demons kicked a higher score in the first quarter than they had in the whole of the previous Saturday's match. The tally included three from unheralded ruckman/forward Jack Fitzpatrick, but he injured his knee as he kicked the third goal.
Fitzpatrick's three goals gave his side a great platform against the in-form Lions, but just like their last match in Darwin a year earlier Melbourne followed up a good first term with a poor second which handed over the advantage. Colin Sylvia also suffered an injury, and like Fitzpatrick he returned at less than 100%.
Melbourne struck back in the third quarter to give themselves a fighting chance, and got to within 10 points with a few minutes left but with Colin Garland off-field for good with an ankle injury they couldn't get any closer. A Brent Staker goal finished the match and condemned the Demons to their third straight loss.
Best were Viney, Frawley and Davey.
Dean Kent replaced Jimmy Toumpas during the third quarter.
