Collingwood made a slow start and trailed by 19 points ten minutes into the first term, but from then on the Mapgies were so dominant on the day that they only made three interchanges.
Barassi said "We apologise to supporters and the football public who have come to expect something from these clashes with Collingwood. Hardly anything went right. We only had four players who played well".
Best for Melbourne were Battiston, Hughes and Parish. Peter Giles injured his medial ligament and would miss the rest of the season. Gerard Healy also injured his collarbone.
