Originally drafted by Collingwood with selection 28 in the 2006 National Draft, Dawes won a premiership with the Magpies in 2010 but was traded to the Demons after a disappointing 2012 season. His debut was delayed by two pre-season injuries, and other than a brief cameo in Melbourne's first pre-season game he didn't appear until Round 7. Dawes was injured and missed games twice more before the end of the year but proved a reliable player in an otherwise poor forward line.

He improved his output to 18 games in 2014, and led the low-scoring side's goalkicking - albeit with the equal lowest total of any leading goalkicker since 1966. He suffered an inconsistent 2015, playing 14 games but spending time in the VFL during the season.

In 2016 Dawes entered the season injured and struggled to six senior games. He was delisted at the end of the season and played for Sorrento in 2017.
