Equal lowest score at Kardinia Park
After a string of impressive performances under caretaker coach Neil Craig the Demons travelled to Kardinia Park - scene of some of their lowest moments in recent years - and not only had to contend with the top of the table Cats by a Geelong day which saw 9mm of rain fall by the time the match finished.
In light rain during the first quarter Melbourne were competitive, but as it became heavier throughout the day they were unable to adapt to the conditions. As Geelong played what looked like dry weather football on the sodden ground, the visitors were unable to get the ball past halfway for most of the second half.
Geelong's inaccurate 2.8 in the last quarter saved Melbourne from a bigger blowout, but despite avoiding conceding 100 points for the first time all season Craig's team went home with a number of unwanted records.
The score equalled Melbourne's lowest ever at Kardinia Park, was their equal fifth lowest score since 1980, they had the lowest amount of inside 50's ever recorded (19) and Geelong's +51 differential represented the greatest disparity between teams on record.
Best were Frawley, N. Jones and McDonald.
Sam Blease replaced Jack Fitzpatrick during the third quarter.
