On a day where the seniors were due to go around in the big match, the seconds got Melbourne off to a winning start with a comfortable win over the Swans.

Aided by 7 goals from rookie Ben Crameri, Melbourne were never seriously challenged other than a brief period during the second quarter. After a lopsided first quarter when the Demons' lead should have been even more, South struck back to be within ten points at the long break. A 0.6 third quarter, though, let Melbourne off the hook.

It was Melbourne's big men who won the game, and later that afternoon the seniors would ensure a famous double for the Demons.

Best were Crameri, John Lord and Carlton recruit Graham Kerr.
