Mark of the Year nomination - Jeremy Howe
After booting five goals in one of their best first quarters of the season, the Demons managed just one point after the siren in the second as Port started to dominate their makeshift forward line.
Two goals late in the third quarter dragged the margin back under a goal before an uncharacteristic error kicking off the ground by Colin Garland gifted Port breathing space going into the last quarter.
The Demons had prepared for the Darwin conditions for a month, but still fell away sharply again in the last quarter. For the fourth time in 2012 they had gone to the last change within range of victory or ahead and kicked one or less goals.
Best were Nicholson, Jetta and Grimes.
Jeremy Howe was reported for misconduct in that he wiped blood on opponent Tom Jonas. He received a reprimand.
The crowd was the lowest the Demons had played in front of since Round 12, 1992
James Strauss replaced James Magner in the third quarter.
